Craig's modification of his understanding about nest builders to include squirrels, as explained by Jean Piaget's theory, is an example of accommodation, which involves changing one's schemata to incorporate new information.
Explanation:Jean Piaget would say that Craig’s new way of thinking about nests after learning squirrels also build them is an example of accommodation. When children learn new information, they adjust their schemata, which are mental models used to categorize and interpret information. This process can involve either assimilation, where new information is incorporated into existing schemata without changing them, or accommodation, where schemata are changed to incorporate new information.
In Craig’s case, he had to change his existing schema that associated nest building only with birds, to now including squirrels as nest builders. This process of modifying his schema to include this new information is clearly an example of accommodation, as per Piaget’s theory of cognitive development.
Each person should list one cognitive bias (anchoring, for example) that is mentioned or referred to in the readings for this week. Define it (you can Google for additional definitions), and provide an example of how this bias might come into play in a digital security or privacy scenario.
Answer:
One example of cognitive bias is the confirmation bias. Confirmation bias is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor and recall information in a way that confirms or strengthens one's prior personal beliefs or hypothesis. Confirmation bias can prevent one from considering other information when making decisions since they tend to only see factors that support their personal beliefs. This can lead to poor or faulty choices.
In digital security, confirmation bias unconsciously affect security professionals; for example an experienced security analyst may decide or conclude what happened prior to investigating a data breach due to previous events and experiences.
Explanation:
Cognitive biases are defined as errors in thinking that influence how an individual to make decisions. Examples of cognitive biases in digital security or private scenario include: aggregate bias, the fundamental attribution error, the framing effect, anchoring bias, availability bias and confirmation bias.
The availability heuristic is a cognitive bias where decisions are based on readily available or recent information. In a digital security context, this could lead to skewed perceptions of threats. Awareness and consideration of multiple sources of information are key to prevent such biases.
Explanation:Let's consider another cognitive bias, the availability heuristic. This is a cognitive bias where a decision is based on information that is most readily available, rather than considering all possible options. It's an example of how people often rely on recent or easily remembered information when making decisions.
In a digital security or privacy scenario, consider a case where an individual repeatedly hears about a certain type of computer virus. Because this type of virus is most 'available' in their mind, they might focus their digital security efforts on preventing that virus, neglecting other potential threats.
They would then be at greater risk of other viruses or security breaches because their perception was skewed by the availability heuristic.
An important step in overcoming cognitive biases like this one is awareness. By understanding how they work, we can better identify when we might be falling into these bias traps and adjust our thinking and decision-making accordingly.
It's crucial to consider broader context and multiple sources of information in order to make more accurate and less biased decisions.
